Still Rotting
No matter where you go, there’s at least one Obituary logo on something—camo hat, patch on a vest, sweatpants, shirt. From New York to California. War metal to slam shows. You’ll find that iconic logo. I’ve even noticed when some bands come through Tampa, someone will wear a Tampa band shirt. Whenever I see that it feels like a big night for that person.
I’m in Tampa. I’m wearing the shirt.
Obituary in Tampa feels right. It’s the thing in the place. Like hearing “Miami” in Miami—corny on paper, undeniable in practice. Context does something to music. It charges it. Makes it tangible.
Obituary rules because they’ve never sounded like anybody else. That stomp. That swamp-groove. That blunt, fuzzy weight that doesn’t rush. Those slow chords buzzing in the air like mosquitoes. Things move a little slower down here—not lazy, not dull—just… deliberate. Heat makes you economical. You don’t waste motion. You don’t waste notes. Obituary embodies that. It’s not about speed or virtuosity. It’s about intention. About making every hit land like a boot in mud.
