METAL DETECTED
Going to Richmond always felt like going to America. The real America. Leaving my pastel beach-house version of the South—sun-burned, leathery, and crazed—for the real South. The South. Brick and iron. A place where history happened. It feels like it’s always been there and will be there long after me. It’s interesting to travel so far north to get there, but I guess that’s as American as it gets, things have a habit of staying where they are.
Heart of Winter broke that habit. This wasn’t some half-assed attempt at reclaiming former glory, picking up where it left off. Some nostalgic victory lap clinging to a past life. This was a reestablishment. A monumental leap forward in scale, quality and devotion. A legit fest with its feet under it and its eyes forward. No core. No scene. No trend. Just people dedicated to the art of extreme music—music made by lifers, for lifers. Next year is already on the horizon and I can’t wait to see what this becomes.
Richmond is real. It builds. It endures. And when it throws a weekend like this, it reminds you why you keep coming back.
